Warmly, Gabriel Stelian-Shanks, Artistic Director Nilan Johnson, Associate Artistic Director Ali Skye Bennet, Artistic Line Producer Julie Solomon, Artistic Coordinator Sherri Eden Barber, Program Consultant Spring 2020 - New Visions/New Voices Application Ends on More Apply to Spring 2020 - New Visions/New Voices Application New Visions/New Voices (NV/NV) is a rigorous after-school theatre training program for New York City metropolitan area high school students. It is the only after-school program in the nation to exclusively focus on the techniques of stage direction as the lens into exploration -- empowering students with creative skills, personal agency and leadership techniques to discover, trust, speak, and amplify their personal voice and vision. Working with professional actors and directors as teachers, the lessons learned during NV/NV can spark future career interest in theatre, film/television, creative industries, or non-artistic professions -- law, medicine, marketing, politics, science, and more -- where the tools are directly applicable and essential. NV/NV is offered at no cost to the student. NV/NV takes place after school at the Drama League Theater Center in Tribeca. PROGRAM NV/NV gives the student the power and ability to critically analyze and respond to multiple perspectives. Through understanding the power of perspective, one can influence and meaningfully impact a community and the world at large. Across ten weeks, students will be in conversation with theatre professionals from Broadway and Off-Broadway, learning techniques and exercises to envision and stage scenes, explore concepts around personal points of view, and attend performances across several cultural practices (visual art, theatre, film, etc.). This immersion broadens and refines their own aesthetics, while "pulling back the curtain" on the realities of a career in the cultural sector. During the final weeks of the program, students begin rehearsing scenes from a play with professional actors under the guidance of a Master Directing Teacher. A workshop presentation of the directorial work of the student body is presented on the last day of class. New Visions/New Voices is made possible by a generous grant from The Leo Shull Foundation for the Arts. PRACTICUM - Meet, Speak and Work with professional directors and directors - Visit art galleries, Off-Broadway, Broadway, etc. - Learn directorial techniques/exercises - Learn about career paths inside (and outside) the arts - Strengthen public speaking skills - Learn time management skills - Learn how to lead a team - Learn techniques on how to manifest/articulate your artistic visions ELIGIBILITY This program is open to all New York City resident high school students across the five boroughs. Students must be able to commit to coming to the entire session below ( mass transportation is provided ): WINTER SESSION Classes - Every Wednesday from March 4, 2020 – April 29, 2020, 4:30-6:30pm An invited showing of the scenes the students are working on will be on April 29, 2020 at 7pm . Mandatory rehearsals will take place on Saturday, April 4, 2020 & April 25, 2020 from 10-6pm . A meal will be provided. Performances - the dates of the performances that the class will attend are TBA, but please note that the class will have the opportunity to go to up to 3 performances, usually with curtains at 7pm or 8pm.
